For Edmonton Elks wide receiver Dillon Mitchell, the journey to professional football wasn’t just about talent, it was a testament to the power of family, faith, and unwavering dedication. Growing up, Mitchell’s passion for football was ignited by his father, who first placed a ball in his hands which blossomed Mitchell’s love for sports at a young Mitchell.

“I think it came from my dad, for sure,” Mitchell shared. “He put me in sports, initially putting the ball in my hand, and from that point on, I was one of those young kids who wanted to get better. I’d set things up in the backyard, whether it was football or basketball. I just wanted to play.”

Mitchell’s parents were more than just spectators in his journey; they were his foundation. His father was a constant motivator in athletics, while his mother emphasized academics and mental well-being.

“They were absolutely huge,” Mitchell said. “My father has been a crucial piece in my journey, and my mother as well. She kept my head right with academics and mentally supported me. I couldn’t have reached this level without them”

As much as a support system Mitchell’s parents were for him, the lessons in work ethic and decision-making were central takeaways he learned from his parents.

“My parents taught me that if you don’t work for something, nine times out of ten, you won’t get it,” Mitchell explained. “Hard work was always the focus.”

Outside of his immediate family, Mitchell’s extended family and later his wife provided him with strength and encouragement he needed to reach the next level.

“Pretty much my entire family, from grandparents to cousins, everyone has been there for me at some point. And my wife, especially later in my journey, helped me grow as the man I am today.”

As a young athlete, Mitchell’s days were packed. He devoted himself to improving his craft, often splitting time between basketball and football.

“My routine was intense,” he said. “I’d work out in the morning, have another session in the afternoon, and then go from school to practice. My day wouldn’t end until nine at night. I didn’t really take time off.”

Mitchell’s routine was dedicated to two sports, basketball and football. While basketball played a significant part of his life, Mitchell knew football was his calling. “I feel like I made the right choice with football. With the work I put into my craft, I knew I could make it to the professional level.”

Surely enough, Mitchell accomplished his goal as one of the most surreal moments in Mitchell’s career came when his name was called during the NFL Draft.

“It was definitely surreal,” he said. “I’d watched the draft since I was five or six, and hearing my name called was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

His time at Oregon also held a special place in his heart ever since he was a young boy. “Oregon was a dream come true. Since I was 10, I wanted to go there. From the jerseys to the fans, it was everything I imagined and more.”

Despite the hard work and dedication from Mitchell, his path wasn’t without challenges. After leaving the University of Oregon and a stint with the Minnesota Vikings, letting go of those opportunities was difficult for Mitchell.

“Life comes at you fast, and sometimes you don’t know what decisions to make,” he said. “But I’ve learned to trust God and believe in the journey. You always get another test, and how you respond leads you back to your destiny.”

Now playing in the CFL, Mitchell cherishes his role with the Edmonton Elks. He views it as not just an opportunity for himself but also an inspiration for younger athletes.

“Coming to Edmonton has been a blessing,” he shared. “For kids in Canada and the States, there’s so much opportunity here. You might not see it at first, but your destiny can unfold in unexpected ways.”

For aspiring football players, Mitchell’s advice is simple: “Have a support system and be ready to work. Whether you’re aiming to be the next Tom Brady or just chasing your dream, you have to put in the effort.”
